The laudable return of Pi Chapter to the IU campus is a success story that has not escaped the attention of alumni and Greek affairs professionals around the country. Recently, Senator Richard “Dick” Lugar, Denison ’54, made note of this during his initiation banquet remarks on January 30 at the chapter house. Senator Lugar has two Pi Chapter sons, John ’85 and David ’87.
An integral part of Pi’s successful reemergence has been The Marching Along Educational Foundation and its board of directors. The Foundation engineered the recently completed Heritage of Pi capital campaign and now oversees an ongoing annual giving initiative, The Second Hundred Years of Pi – A New Challenge.
Let’s take a look at the foundation board’s responsibilities, remembering that all are volunteers working for you and for Pi.
The Marching Along Educational Foundation board of directors is comprised of Pi Chapter alumni who have demonstrated exemplary success in business, educational philanthropy, and financial management. These volunteers will direct the foundation’s operations and mission. The foundation board will oversee and receive reports from the capital campaign executive committee and class and regional leaders committee and the chapter house building committee.
Take your hat off to the foundation directors and remember they are always seeking Pi alumni to step forward and lend their expertise to the foundation’s efforts.
The president of the board is F. Edward “Ed” Gustafson ’64, MBA ’67. Ed has had an extraordinary career as a business executive and entrepreneur. Director Michael “Mick” McClurg ’62 has weathered the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and remains a steadfast disciple of retired business school professor Bill Haeberle. Michael is married to alumna Emma (Sweet). Director James Purky ’77 lives in Lake Forest, Illinois, with wife Anne and family. Jim is with Rabobank in Chicago.
